Lucania Funghi: mountain flavours

Our farm stands on the Small Lucanian Dolomites, in the suggestive Gallipoli Cognato Park, in a quiet corner of Basilicata region. Here, cardoncelli mushrooms grow in the warmth of familiar tradition, among heady and unique scents of our land.

My name is Carmen Canosa and I’m a business woman. I’ve taken a novel approach to conserve the roots of our lucanian land. Despite local challenges, I decided to take my chance. Never give up in the face of difficulties, will serve me in facing this new challenge.

I look the future with determination and my task is to promote Lucania Funghi in the world.

In our farm we pluge into the fascinating world of mushrooms from the plantations of the most delicious varieties to the loving attention of them: careful mushrooming and accurate placement in plastic crates.. Every work step is full of passion and dedication.
We guarantee knowledge and expertise of the production process. The top quality of our products is guaranteed thanks to our experience.

Our strengths

Among our strengths is definitely our experience: we guarantee expertise and knowledge of the production process. Quality is paramount, as we meticulously monitor every phase from production to commercialization. What sets us apart is our artisanal approach: we value the unique characteristics of our territory while remaining open to new and sustainable agricultural practices.

Commercialization is a crucial step as we constantly strive to promote the goodness and authenticity of our mushrooms.

Quality and customer satisfaction came first

Our company is committed to meeting the needs of our main customers: fruit and vegetable wholesalers, restaurants, and processing labs. A large portion of our clientele is made up of loyal customers, while others have joined us thanks to social media, television features, and newspaper articles.

Our main competitors are large companies because, by producing a greater quantity, they can offer a competitive price at the expense of quality. My model of inspiration is agricultural cooperatives because collaboration is the lifeblood that fuels the progress of small to medium-sized enterprises. Indeed, by networking with other companies in the regional territory, it is possible to optimize costs, gain greater market visibility, and increase production by diversifying the offerings while maintaining quality standards.

A family story, between tradition and innovation

The team at our company is a family affair: my father handles product commercialization; my mother is involved in mushroom processing; my brother manages the production process; my sister is the administrative manager; I “cultivate” social relationships; and finally, the youngest, my 9-year-old niece, is the heart and soul of the company, our mascot.

Our project involves specializing in the market segment related to the restaurant industry by marketing a product ready to be used in the kitchens of top chefs, packaged in sustainable packaging.

We value the unique characteristics of our territory while remaining open to new and sustainable agricultural practices. This generates distinctive branding in the market, helping to distinguish and recognize our products, which in turn fosters customer loyalty.

Cardoncello attentive to environmental sustainability

To cultivate our cardoncello mushrooms and reduce environmental impact, we have built a controlled environment greenhouse. It is designed to ensure optimal growing conditions for the mushrooms through a system that controls humidity, temperature, and ventilation, all manageable from a smartphone. Powered by solar panels, this setup utilizes renewable energy, significantly optimizing production costs and respecting the environment. We have strong relationships with suppliers, ensuring that we always have high-quality raw materials.

Our production flexibility allows us to quickly adapt to market demands, offering customized solutions to our clients. Direct commercialization fosters clearer and more immediate communication between the company and customers, enabling faster feedback.

The range of our mushrooms

Lucania Funghi is excited to present its basket of fresh and artisanal products. From the cultivation on Pleurotus eryngii-infused substrate: the delicious and crunchy fresh Lucanian cardoncello (with and without soil), followed by semi-processed cardoncello, and finally cardoncello preserved in oil, we offer a complete range of mushroom delicacies.

We purchase the substrate block, plant it, and then create the suitable conditions for mushroom growth. After about 20 days, the mushrooms start to sprout. When they reach the right size, we harvest them and sort them into first and second lines. We then arrange them in crates, performing an initial processing of the mushrooms. My father then inspects all the crates, and if they pass the quality control, they are ready for sale. Transportation is also a crucial step as it requires maintaining a specific temperature.
